Family Friendly NM Urges Employers to Stay Informed and Engaged in Advancing Access, Inclusion and Diversity in all Aspects of Our Businesses and Society

At Family Friendly New Mexico, our mission is to recognize and support employers that embrace family friendly policies, fostering environments where businesses, employees and their families thrive. As an organization committed to access, inclusion and diversity, we believe it is essential to address recent developments regarding the US Supreme Court decision on Affirmative Action, as well as other significant rulings made by the Court.

Affirmative Action has played a critical role in promoting equal opportunities and leveling the playing field for historically marginalized groups. It has helped address systemic barriers and create pathways for individuals who have faced discrimination in education and employment. We recognize the importance of Affirmative Action in advancing equity and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace.

In addition to the US Supreme Court decision on Affirmative Action, the Court made several other rulings last week that carry profound implications for business owners and our society. These rulings addressed a range of vital issues, including student loan forgiveness and LGBTQ+ rights. Each of these decisions highlights the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding access, inclusion and DEI, not only in the context of Affirmative Action but also in these important areas of our society.

Employers who prioritize family friendly policies often understand the interconnectedness of access, inclusion, and DEI. They recognize that by implementing policies that support worklife integration, paid leave, pay equity, and flexible work arrangements, they create an environment where all employees can thrive and contribute their best. These policies not only benefit employees and their families but also contribute to the overall success and productivity of the organization.

We acknowledge that Affirmative Action is a complex and evolving topic, and recent US Supreme Court decisions have brought attention to the ongoing challenges surrounding hiring practices and diversity in the workforce. It is crucial for employers to remain vigilant in their efforts to promote diversity and combat bias in recruitment, hiring, and promotion processes.

Furthermore, the recent US Supreme Court rulings on student loan forgiveness and LGBTQ+ rights serve as reminders that businesses must actively address issues of systemic inequities and work towards creating inclusive environments for all individuals. Employers should review and strengthen their DEI policies and practices, ensuring fair and inclusive hiring practices that provide equal opportunities for all candidates. By prioritizing diversity and inclusion, employers can harness the full potential of their workforce and create environments that reflect the rich tapestry of our communities.

As an organization, we remain dedicated to supporting employers who prioritize access, inclusion and DEI.

We will continue to provide resources, education and recognition for employers who embrace these principles and contribute to a more equitable and thriving business community in New Mexico. In a recent statement, EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows emphasized that the recent US Supreme Court decision on Affirmative Action, specifically in the cases of Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina should not be interpreted as limiting employer efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the workforces. Chair Burrows highlights that the decision does not undermine the legality of implementing programs aimed at fostering equal opportunities for all qualified workers, regardless of their backgrounds. However, the recent series of Supreme Court rulings encompassed a broader spectrum of crucial issues, such as student loan forgiveness and LGBTQ+ rights, carrying significant implications for both business owners and our society at large. These rulings underscore the evolving legal landscape that business owners might navigate as they strive to cultivate diverse inclusive environments while upholding their responsibilities to employees and society.

Together, let us work towards a future where all individuals have equal opportunities, businesses champion inclusive practices and families thrive. In light of recent US Supreme Court rulings, we urge everyone to stay informed and engaged in advancing access, inclusion, and diversity in all aspects of our businesses and society.
