Introducing Sustainability–Our Newest Platinum Level Category

Sustainable policies create healthier workplaces, reduce costs, and strengthen communities, benefiting employees and their families now and into the future. In order to earn Platinum Level Recognition, your business must have at least one policy in each of the Platinum family friendly categories, including Sustainability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the new Sustainability Category?

The Sustainability category recognizes businesses that are actively working to reduce their environmental impact and foster a culture of sustainability in the workplace and community. It highlights leadership in eco-conscious practices that also support families and employees.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

To apply for the Platinum level, a business must:

  • Already qualify for the Gold level Family Friendly Business Award®, and
  • Meet at least two family-friendly policies in each of the first four categories (Paid Leave, Health Support, Work Schedules, Economic Support), plus
  • Meet at least one policy in each of the Platinum level categories, including sustainability.

3. Why was this new category added?

Sustainability is directly tied to family wellbeing. Families thrive in communities with clean air, safe water, and resilient economies. By recognizing businesses that invest in sustainable practices, we highlight those who protect both their workforce and future generations.

4. What types of practices count as “sustainability” for this award?

Examples include:

  • Written sustainability or environmental policies
  • Energy-saving or water-saving measures
  • Recycling/composting programs
  • Green purchasing and vendor partnerships
  • EV infrastructure and incentives
  • Climate resilience and worker protections (e.g., heat policies)
  • Training staff on environmental best practices

5. Do we need a formal sustainability policy to apply?

No. A written sustainability or environmental policy is not a requirement, but is recommended. If your business doesn’t yet have one, we recommend starting with a simple one-page statement of your values and commitments.

6. How does my business benefit from this award?

Recipients gain:

  • Recognition as leaders in sustainability and family-friendliness

7. How does sustainability tie into being family friendly?

Environmental practices reduce costs, protect employee health, and build resilient communities. For example:

  • EV charging helps working parents with long commutes.
  • Reducing single-use plastics keeps toxins out of our communities.
  • Heat policies protect outdoor workers, many of whom are caregivers providing for their families.

8. How do I apply?

Applications are submitted through the Family Friendly New Mexico online portal. You’ll complete the sustainability section (questions provided above), along with your Gold-level requirements.

9. What if we are just starting on sustainability?

That’s okay! We are developing a toolkit that will provide sample policies, training resources, and easy first steps. You can also reapply in future years as your practices expand.

10. Where can I find more resources?

Family Friendly New Mexico provides guidance, sample templates, and a community of peer businesses. We also link to state, local, and national resources for funding (e.g., solar, EV infrastructure) and training.
